Scars of War

Attributes

There are 7 Attributes in Scars of War, each representing one aspect of a character's physical and mental capabilities. After character creation these attributes cannot be directly modified, although certain Traits can modify them to some degree.

The default Attribute level for a humanoid is 10, with a maximum of 20. Depending on your Race, your base Attribute level may change. Only the non-human/magical races (Shar and Lazar) have Attribute maximums higher than 20.

Strength

Your raw physical power. A high Strength will increase the amount of damage you inflict during melee, your Hit Points, how much you can carry, your athletic ability and how easily you can intimidate NPCs. All weapons have a minimum Strength value needed to use them effectively. A character that does not meet this requirement will suffer penalties to their Attack Rating with that weapon.

Agility

Grace and coordination. Agility is an important attribute for any would-be warrior as it directly affects your Attack Rating with melee weapons as well as your ability to dodge, block and parry blows. Agility also affects a number of Subterfuge skills and decreases the damage your character receives from falling.

Endurance

Endurance determines physical toughness and the ability to withstand hardship. Hit Points, Stamina and Body Resistance (resistance to disease and poison) are all affected by Endurance.

Perception

An overall measure of a character's sensory acuity. Perception is important for any character specializing in archery as it directly affects their ranged weapon Attack Rating. Perception also modifies all sensory checks (Listen, Spot, etc.).

Intellect

Intellect determines a character's mental capabilities: How quickly they learn, how well they reason and how well they retain infomration. Intellect affects a character's starting bonus Knowledge, their learning modifier and their ability to control complex spells.

Willpower

Whereas Intellect represents mental agility, Willpower reflects a character's mental strength and endurance. A character with a high Willpower is better able to focus and to resist distracting influences. Willpower affects Hit Points, Stamina, Mental Resistance and how tiring it is for a character to channel magical energy.

Charisma

Charisma is a measure of a character's ability to interact with others and largely determines their effectiveness within social situations. Charisma affects all social skills.

Health, Stamina and Exhaustion

Hit Points, Stamina and Exhaustion are derived from a combination of thecharacter's Attributes; the player cannot modify them directly.

A character's Hit Points represent their overall physical well-being. If their Hit Points drop to 0 they are dead. Sleep restores Hit Points slowly whereas healing techniques do so at a quicker rate. It is possible to receive crippling wounds which only healing techniques can cure. Strength, Endurance and Willpower determine a character's Hit Points.

Stamina is a measure of a character's ability to resist fatigue. Many actions incur a Stamina cost to use, for example swinging a sword or casting a spell. When a character's Stamina drops too low they begin to get fatigued and their abilities lose effectiveness. Stamina, and thereby effectiveness, can be regained by not using any taxing abilities for a while as Stamina regenerates naturally. Endurance and Willpower determine a character's Stamina.

Exhaustion is a measure of long term fatigue. If your Stamina drops too far into a fatigued state you begin to slowly accumulate Exhaustion points. These Exhaustion points reduce your maximum Stamina. For example, if your character has a maximum of 100 stamina points and performing taxing activities drops your current Stamina to 30 as well as accumulating 1 point of Exhaustion, stopping and waiting for a while will cause your Stamina to regenerate but only up to a maximum of 99. With few, rare exceptions, Exhaustion can only be removed by sleeping.

Exhaustion is also often the cost of character-enhancing "buffs" such as beneficial potions. A potion may instantly restore your Stamina (allowing you to continue a desperate battle), but leave you with 10 points of Exhaustion once the stimulant has worn off.

Managing Hit Points, Stamina and Exhaustion levels is vitally important for any character.
