Scars of War

An Indie RPG by Gareth Fouche

Backgrounds - Military

Infantry

As with most who got drafted you were given a sword, shield and lessons on how not to stab yourself. But it turned out you had something of a talent for combat. After proving your mettle repeatedly on the field you were given the opportunity to train further, better equipment and a position in one of the more experienced battalions.

Smith

Armies are no good without solid equipment, the best soldier in the world is nothing if he can''t rely on his armor to turn aside a blade. You filled a vital role during the war, that of ensuring the rest of the soldiers had what they needed to continue the fight. The bards will never sing songs of how you worked through the night, reforging scavenged and broken weapons into now swords and armor for your comrades, but you know the value of your contribution.

Archer

The best way to kill the enemy is from a distance as far as you're concerned. Let them find death raining from the sky long before they ever get close enough to stick a blade in you. With this basic insight, you volunteered to train as an archer. It wasn't quite as safe as you imagined, but it was certainly better than being in the front lines, getting a sword in the guts for your trouble.

+1 Skill Rank (Weapon Mastery (Bow))

+1 Knowledge Rank (Bowing and Fletching)

Requisition Clerk

No one appreciates the amount of paperwork an army generates. While it may not be the most heroic of tasks, someone has to fill out the requisition forms and ensure order is kept. You were that someone. Without your careful monitoring, unscroupulous soldiers would have stolen equipment and drunk themselves silly at the Queen's expense. The role of the Requisition Clerk is a vital one in any large-scale military manouver. And it doesn't hurt that clerks rarely see the frontlines of combat. You had to kiss a few butts to get the position, but it was worth it.

+1 Skill Rank (Barter)

+1 Skill Rank (Bluff)

Battlemage

It is standard practice for an experienced mage to test new recruits for signs of magical talent. While not all potential mages are discovered this way, there are a few young people amazed to discover that the strange feelings they get and that slight sense of emotional disconnection grants them the ability to bend reality by will alone. While the training the military gives such new battlemages is rudimentary and lacking in many of the basics, it does grant them sufficient ability to wreak destruction on the battlefield. What such mages do with their talents in times of peace is something to worry about when there isn't an enemy howling for your blood.

+1 Willpower

+1 Trait Rank (Awakened Magic)

+1 Skill Rank (Spellcraft)

+1 Skill Rank (Channelling)

Field Medic

Where most of the men and women drafted into the Atharan military learned to wound and kill others, you learned how to put them back together. You worked tirelessly to stitch wounds, set bones and treat infection, often in appalling conditions. Of all who fought in that war you have perhaps the best understanding of the pain and suffering inflicted by man on his fellows.

Benefits :

+1 Intellect

+2 Skill Rank (Concentration)

+2 Knowledge Rank (Healing)

+1 Knowledge Rank (Herbalism)

+1 Knowledge Rank (Anatomy)

- Bonus Item - Healers Kit

Infiltrator

Sometimes the straightforward approach isn't the best one. Sometimes lives can be saved not by a steady sword arm and a courageous heart, but by the knife in the night, by the fire that destroys vital enemy supplies or by foreknowledge of the enemies plans. This is where you come in. You've always looked upon your role in the war as simply 'doing what needed to be done', but whatever it was, it was effective.

Benefits :

+1 Agility

+1 Skill Rank (Melee)

+1 Skill Rank (Sneak)

+1 Skill Rank (Trap Mastery)

+1 Knowledge Rank (Anatomy)

- Bonus Item - Dagger

- Bonus Item - Hide Armor

Sergeant

Much to your surprise, it turns out you have a natural ability to lead. When your squad lost it's leader in an ambush deep in enemy territory you found yourself naturally taking charge. You kept your fellow soldiers focused and led them back safety; on your return your superiors awarded you your dead Sergeant's rank. It also turns out that, contrary to the bards' tales, leading men isn't about charging forward with a dramatic battlecry, well, not most of the time. No, most of the time it is about knowing what your men are thinking and how to get the most from them on the battlefield.
